ASUS Republic of Gamers and Xbox Announce New ROG Xbox Ally Handhelds

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today unveiled a new series of handheld gaming devices, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, developed in collaboration with Xbox. These new models aim to elevate the standard for portable gaming through enhanced ergonomics, a refined software experience, and powerful new processors.

The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X feature a completely redesigned chassis, prioritizing user comfort for extended gaming sessions. The new design draws inspiration from Xbox controllers, incorporating a re-engineered palm rest and textured patterns for improved grip. The ROG Xbox Ally X further enhances immersion with impulse triggers, a feature familiar to Xbox gamers, providing nuanced haptic feedback in supported titles.

“We wanted to take our handheld to the next level, but we could not do it alone,” stated Shawn Yen, Head of the Consumer product team at ASUS. He added, “This revolutionary partnership with Microsoft allowed us to forge a brand new device with ROG muscle and the soul of Xbox”.

A key innovation in the new Ally series is the seamless software experience. Designed in partnership with Xbox, players are greeted with a full-screen Xbox interface upon powering on the device. This Windows 11-powered software has been optimized for handheld use, offering intuitive joystick and button navigation and reduced system overhead. Quick access to settings and customizable widgets is available via the Game Bar with a single press of the Xbox button. The devices maintain the versatility of Windows 11, allowing easy access to games and mods from various sources. Roanne Sones, CVP at Xbox, remarked,

“With ROG, we made it happen on the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X”.

Under the hood, the ROG Xbox Ally is powered by an AMD Ryzen™ Z2 A Processor, offering console-caliber performance and enhanced power efficiency with its 60Wh battery for improved battery life. The ROG Xbox Ally X takes performance a step further with the new AMD Ryzen™ AI Z2 Extreme Processor, designed to deliver next-level gaming performance for demanding AAA titles and enable higher graphical fidelity at increased framerates. Both processors leverage AMD’s latest software suite, including AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (FSR), Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) frame generation, to optimize graphics and improve framerates for smoother gameplay. The ROG Xbox Ally X’s AMD Ryzen™ AI Z2 Extreme processor also includes an NPU, preparing the device for future AI features.

“Battery life is paramount on handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X,” said Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD. He noted that “The Ryzen Z2 series improves efficiency over the previous generation while still offering excellent performance in modern games”.

Both the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are slated for release this holiday season in select markets, with additional markets to follow.
