The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus Will Surpass the Snapdragon 855

Multinational semiconductor giant Qualcomm had recently announced the successor of their flagship level SoC processor, the Snapdragon 855, the Snapdragon 855+.

This mid-year refresh had the same architecture of the 855, with tweaks that clains to improve overall performance, 5G connectivity, gaming, Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality (XR).

What’s different?

Snapdragon 855

  • Kryo 485 CPU Prime Core clock speed up to 2.84GHz
  • Adreno 640 GPU @ 585MHz

Snapdragon 855 Plus

  • Kryo 485 CPU Prime Core clock speed up to 2.96GHz
  • Adreno 640 GPU @ 672MHz

What’s clearly seen in the comparison is a 15% bump in graphical performance, to cater to more demanding mobile gaming titles. Additionally, an updated Vulkan 1.1 Graphics Driver delivers 20% more power efficiency than Open GL ES.

In terms of AI, the chipset will feature the latest 4th-generation AI engine.

As for modem, the Plus will feature a 5G X50 modem just like some 855’s, instead of a fully intergrated 4G/5G x55 modem.

In short, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is the same as Nvidia creating the RTX Super series as an improvement refresh to the current RTX series. Let’s see what flagships of 2019 will feature this SoC.
