Qualcomm Technologies unveiled the Snapdragon® 8s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, bringing high-end features from the 8 series to a wider range of Android flagships. This new platform promises exceptional user experiences with a focus on on-device generative AI, advanced photography, hyper-realistic mobile gaming, cutting-edge connectivity, and lossless high-definition sound.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 boasts support for powerful on-device generative AI, allowing users to interact with large language models like Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, and even Gemini Nano directly on their phones. This paves the way for innovative features like content creation, enhanced productivity tools, and personalized experiences.
“With on-device generative AI and advanced photography capabilities, Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is designed to empower users with greater creativity and productivity,” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies. “We are excited to introduce this latest addition to our premium Snapdragon 8-series, bringing these exceptional features to more consumers.”
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies to be the first to launch a device powered by Snapdragon 8s Gen 3,” said William Lu, Partner and President of Xiaomi Corporation, President of the International Business Department, GM of Xiaomi Brand. “This new platform will allow us to deliver a personalized premium experience to our customers, thanks to the power of generative AI.”
Several major OEMs, including Honor, iQOO, realme, Redmi, and Xiaomi, have already adopted the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.
Is It Different From Snapdragon 8 Gen 3?
I know why you’d ask this. Historically, there were other variants of Snapdragon 8 Gen chipsets, such as last year’s 8+ Gen 2, which indicated that it had higher performance gains over the default 8 Gen 2. This time around, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 positions itself to be slight BELOW that Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, to cater to a market that needs flagship performance at a lower cost.
Cores | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 |
Prime Cores | 1x (up to 3.4GHz) | 1x (up to 3GHz) |
Performance Cores | 5x (up to 3.2GHz) | 4x (up to 2.8GHz) |
Efficiency Cores | 3x (up to 2GHz) | 2x (up to 2.3GHz) |
As you can see, the two chips have different core counts and clock speeds, indicating that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is still the most powerful chipset for smartphones this year (until the + comes out).
